How to Build Corporate Climate Resilience
Organizations in the 21st century are facing unprecedented change — including change associated with the climate. How can organizations effectively anticipate and adapt to the climate change we are already facing and still do their part to help to mitigate worst-case climate scenarios? Participants in this workshop will first review evidence that organizations should not wait to square off on climate risks: reactive, regulatory compliance-based decision-making translates to greater risk of organizational failure.
Rather, organizations that fully integrate climate risks into strategic decision making and operational planning have the best chance of building true climate resilience and a path to organizational success in the long run.

The workshop will then introduce a model of climate resilience, zeroing in on how organizations can leverage resilience for strategic advantage and societal benefit. Case examples and interactive discussion will be featured throughout the session.

About the Instructor:

Dr. Bill Barnes is an associate professor of Economics and Environmental Studies at the University of Portland. Given the gravity of the climate change issue, he has been focused on pathways to organizational sustainability and resilience for over 15 years — including in his research, teaching and his University and community service.
