DETAILS

China’s consumer finance sector is booming, driven in no small part by fintech and digital “Internet finance” ventures. How will this finance and technology revolution affect other countries and their financial sectors’ development, particularly in light of China’s increasingly important role in global development efforts? This seminar will take stock of recent and ongoing developments in China’s inclusive digital finance sector and ask about their impacts, regulation and political economy within China, before assessing their prospective significance for global development. In particular, as the economic integration of many low- and middle-income countries with China deepens, thanks to outward-looking initiatives such as the Belt and Road, participants will discuss what role Chinese fintech players can be expected to play, and what may this mean in terms of impacts on low-income finance users in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia.
