The Saint Francis Healthcare System serves more than 715,000 people in southeast Missouri and in a five-state region through Saint Francis Medical Center, a 306-bed nonprofit tertiary care institution in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The hospital is connected to 48 medical partner locations in 33 counties, including major provider systems in St. Louis.
Cape Girardeau is a mid-size city of 40,000 located far from major population centers where large medical centers and teaching hospitals are located. The city is about 100 miles southeast of St. Louis and 150 miles north or Memphis, so when highly specialized care is needed, local clinicians can access the specialty expertise that larger medical centers can provide.
Saint Francis leverages technology to send studies such as pediatric echocardiograms to pediatric radiologists at Children’s Hospital St Louis or mammograms to Women’s Health clinicians. Virtually any imaging study can be transmitted instantaneously. This way, patients no longer must travel to larger cities for care. This saves a tremendous amount of time and money, adding real value for the patient.
In this presentation, experts from Saint Francis Medical Center and Children’s Hospital in St. Louis will discuss how this digital interconnectivity was developed, how it is used with real-world examples, and what underlying technologies are utilized.
