Rolf Künnemann: The Maastricht Principles on the Human Rights of Future Generations

Future persons are discriminated against and their human rights ignored. Recent years, however, have seen increasing political and legal pronouncements on the rights of future generations – also in the field of human rights. In the human rights context future generations mean all future human beings. Maastricht University has a tradition of organizing international expert opinions on frontline topics in human rights. In the past four decades these dealt mostly with economic, social and cultural rights (interpretation of the International Covenant, violations, extraterritorial obligations of States). Currently a new set of principles – Maastricht IV – is being drafted. It will apply human rights law to future persons and is envisaged for October 2022.
