Special Edition of Data Ethics Club: CODED BIAS Screening (The Jean Golding Institute)
Data Ethics Club is a discussion group/”journal” club about doing data science ethically.
In this special edition of Data Ethics Club we will be showing a virtual screening of CODED BIAS followed by a panel Q&A session after the film.
MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini, data journalism professor Meredith Broussard and privacy activist Silkie Carlo take center stage in writer-director Shalini Kantayya’s documentary. It exposes how conscious and unconscious bias are encoded into the algorithms that have become an increasingly ubiquitous part of contemporary life. It dissects the civil rights abuses that result from facial recognition technology and discusses avenues for resistance and progress.
