State Of Waste Report Press Conference

Join residents, students and officials to bring awareness to the harms of plastic pollution in Baltimore.

We, the Zero Waste Coalition and South Baltimore Community Land Trust are proud of the steps Baltimore City has taken to break its reliance on burning and burying. We are on this path because of advocates and experts like you. As we work through implementing a concrete strategy to transition to a Zero Waste future, we know there will be more work along the way. We have been pushing forward to advocate for and create infrastructure here in the city to address our waste that is currently being burned or buried.

As we have learned, a big part of the waste stream is plastics, much of which have no real way to be recycled and end up burned and buried. We also know that when we burn plastics, they are harmful to our health in the form of toxic pollution. A growing global movement is forming to address plastic pollution, starting by exposing that it is not being recycled like corporate interests invest billions in greenwashing assaults on reality.

As a step to move to advance Zero Waste we need to be informed by strong data on the amount of plastics in our waste stream. What is actually being recycled? What plastics can our local systems recycle? Where does all the plastic in our waste stream end up and how does plastic burning intersect with other environmental justice issues?

These questions from residents pushed the Zero Waste Coalition and South Baltimore Community Land Trust to invest in bringing you the Baltimore State Of Waste Report. This report was developed in partnership with the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) and six cities across the US including Baltimore City. The report has new data that is specific to Baltimore on plastic waste and plastic pollution.

We think this event is a way to showcase all the great work that is going on by the community, labor, and government. Please save the date and we’ll see you there!

The event is finished.
