It’s no surprise that Covid-19 threw a wrench into older professionals’ careers and retirement plans.
Already before the pandemic, over half of Americans aged 50+ were pushed out of long term jobs before they chose to retire. With a global shutdown added to the mix, older workers were the most susceptible to layoffs in 2020 and 2021. Furthermore, it’s hardest for workers over 50 to return to work after being pushed out. Ageist stereotypes deem them to be “over qualified” or too expensive to hire.
This career debacle has inspired new ideas in many older workers, especially for those who realize “retirement” in the traditional sense may as well be a pipe dream.
Some have gone so far as to live and work fully remotely, which can be more financially viable than owning or renting a physical home. They’re selling their possessions, working flexible full-time or part-time gigs, starting their own businesses, and traveling the world!

In this online event, CIRKEL Founder Charlotte Japp will moderate a discussion with do-ers and experts in the flex work space with a focus on how remote work will revolutionize employment opportunities for older professionals. We’ll hear from professionals over 50 who have taken the leap to nomadic work, as well as thought leaders on the future of work.
With the ubiquity of online communities and mobile tech, “location independent” professionals can connect with each other internationally (online and IRL) and build support systems for navigating new models of working.
